split - a short story
Early morning. Wake up, brush teeth, shower, dry, clothes, make up. And then the mirror. She looks at herself, satisfied. Mother takes her time to prepare. She gets frustrated with Mother. "Late! Late!" she screams. Past thoughts fill her head. The lies, the broken promises. Mother hurries and both get into the car. They speed off. Awkward silence. A tear shed. Both don't understand. The car door swings open. Money. She refuses.

The world changes. A seismic shift. She slowly forgets the drama. The glass doors open and she is in. People are smiling. Waiting to greet. She turns left to the lift. Presses the button. Moves in and up. Right. Left. She gets there. Her friends are there. The worship leader preparing. Time check. On time. The sound of heavenly music fills the room. Praises. Cries. Prayer. Pure joy for God. Announcements. Lame jokes. Stacking. Classes. Quiet. After service. Pure joy again. Worship and praise. Awe. Prayer. Announcements. Message. A smile. Amen. Talk. Catching up. Leave. Waits silently.

Joy, peace. Broken. Car door slams. Chaos. Yells. She feels jinxed. Questions. No answers. WHY? Eyes swell. Suppressing tears. Joyful no longer. Forgive. Forget. Calm. Home. Lunch. Eat. Here. Why. "Sigh."

You keep me safe in a crazy world.
